There are a few skills or personality traits that will really be needed to run a successful baby planning business.

1) People Skills – It’s a crucial skill to a successful baby planner to be able to really connect with people and help them feel comfortable. Clients will need to feel that their planner takes their concerns seriously and is able to consult them in a way that makes them feel that the planner can be trusted.

2) Organizational Skills – Organizational skills will be important when helping clients plan for their new baby. You will need to keep track of forms and keep track of clients wants and needs. Also, if you order products for your clients, you will need to keep track of those orders also.

3) Love of Learning – Part of being a professional baby planner is to be constantly learning about new products, laws related to baby products, recalled products (car seats, cribs, etc) and anything else that might help you better prepare and consult with your clients about their new baby. Before you being consulting professionally, you will need to spend a significant amount of time researching to make sure that you are prepared to adequately educate your clients about the best way to prepare for their baby.

The nice part about a career in baby planning, is that with just the right personality type, you can do your own research without having to earn a related degree or complete certification to get started.

If you have the skills listed above and would like to pursue a career as a baby planner, the next step would be to start educating yourself and marketing your services whether through local classifieds, newspapers, signs or flyers.  It’s also important to make sure you have professional business cards made up, along with proper forms, etc.  so that you can appear professional while consulting with clients.
